The slide below is from a presentation that I first prepared in 2008 regarding the impact of investments by the U.S. military, USAID and the State Department in communities in the northern portion of Babil province south of Baghdad.  There was correlation between investment and decrease in siginificant acts of violence against US forces.  A study conducted by Eli Berman, Joseph  Feiter and Jacob Shapiro at Princeton University cited evidence of a positive impact.  My full presentation (updated in 2010) is here.    A copy of the Princeton research paper is here.
